• The dairy cow is the most complex farm animal, as she can be growing, lactating and pregnant all at the one time. Thus the fate of dietary energy and protein is an interaction between these various physiological demands plus that for maintenance.
• The amount of protein provided in the grain mix is important, the type of protein is also important. Feed protein contains two major protein fractions: protein digested in the rumen by the microbial population is rumen degradable intake protein (DIP).
